BMS Engineering Guide
Battery PACK BMS protection design for lithium projects.
A battery PACK is only as reliable as its protection strategy. BMS selection should be considered alongside cells, module layout, enclosure, thermal design and validation tests.
Overcharge and over-discharge protection
The BMS must prevent cell voltage from exceeding safe limits during charging and falling too low during discharge. These thresholds vary by chemistry and cell model.
Overcurrent and short-circuit protection
Industrial packs may see motor startup current or sudden load changes. BMS current limits and short-circuit response should match the real equipment profile.
Balancing and consistency
Balancing helps maintain pack health when cells drift over time. Good cell matching, grading and production traceability reduce the burden on the BMS.
Thermal design and validation
Temperature sensors, enclosure design, heat paths and aging tests help confirm that the PACK can operate safely in the intended environment.
